Welcome to Bar Next Door

Located on the bank of Copenhagen’s ”lakes”, Bar Next Door is Madklubben’s very own cocktail den where quality and more than fair prices go hand in hand. Enjoy a true classic or try one of the bartenders’ own creations – the price level for the vast majority of our cocktails is 80 to 85 DKK. Many guests catch a drink before or after dinner at one of the neighboring restaurants, Alabama Social, Madklubben Nørrebro or Gran Torino, but by the weekend the bar is also packed with urban flaneurs driven by thirst more than hunger and they bid the night welcome with a ”skål” bathed in the blue light from the iconic ”Cocktails & Dreams” neon sign.

Espresso Martini: Where to enjoy the coffee drink of your dreams in Copenhagen

Espresso Martini: Where to enjoy the coffee drink of your dreams in Copenhagen

On weekdays, Copenhageners love their coffee. On weekends, Copenhageners love their cocktails. The perfect combination is an obvious choice: Espresso Martini!

The mix of vodka, Kahlua and freshly brewed espresso results in a creamy, sweet and powerful concoction, which serves perfectly as a sensory punch when you need to back in gear after dinner or simply crave an energy boost on a night out on town.

Espresso Martini is a crowd favorite at several of our Madklubben family members. Check out the list beneath to get the full low down on where you can sip your Espresso Martini and how much it costs.

Cheers, and happy weekend!

New restaurants: Madklubben Nørrebro and Gran Torino 2.0 are now open!

New restaurants: Madklubben Nørrebro and Gran Torino 2.0 are now open!

Just as January kissed February ”hello” we here at Madklubben welcomed to no less that two new restaurants. Well, more like 1,5 new restaurants, seeing at our popular Italian pizza pusher Gran Torino just moved to a new location. But with a brand new decor and ditto menu concept it definitely qualifies as  ”breaking foodie news” as well.

Gran Torino moved from its former courtyard space out to 5 Sortedam Dossering right on the bank of Copenhagen’s ”Lakes”. It’s a smaller space but with the perfect atmosphere for an urban pizza place sporting both classic and more gourmet inspired pies. Complete with retired merry-go-round horses, a big window between the busy chefs and hungry diners and a brand new menu concept, Gran Torino version 2.0 opened its doors on February 3rd.

Following a series of test dinners in late January, Madklubben Nørrebro finally opened on Gran Torino’s former address on February 6th. Expect a bustling neighborhood spot featuring yummy dishes from the Middle East and beyond fresh from the roaring flame grill. The interior mixes modernist Danish furniture design with rustic industrial details from the venue’s warehouse past. Check out the full menu here.

Both Gran Torino and Madklubben Nørrebro (surprise!) can be found in Copenhagen’s vibrant district of Nørrebro: A cultural melting pot where immigrants mix with students and creative locals surrounded by cool little shops, inspiring eateries and thirst quenching bars.

Speaking of the latter why not check out our very own Nørrebro cocktail hot spot Bar Next Door while you’re in town?

Winter highlights: What to eat at our restaurants right now

Winter highlights: What to eat at our restaurants right now

With a restaurant family boasting a large number of scrumptious eateries throughout Copenhagen it can be quite difficult to decide which Madklubben branch to visit. We have classic French bistros, juicy steak houses, urban hot spots, Italian favorites and even an American soul food restaurant.

To make the search easier we’ve selected a single item from each of the menus in order to inspire your next restaurant visit. Click on a restaurant’s name and follow the link to the full menu if you feel tempted to read more. Warning: Severe munchies may ensue!

Alabama Social: Feel the winter cold be replaced by a culinary heatwave with Alabama Social’s sticky hot wings. Marinated in extra spicy buffalo sauce and topped with chopped peanuts these birds are part of the restaurants “build your own three course menu from DKK 300” concept.

IMG_5685
Madklubben Vesterbro:
Experience a traditional maritime dish popular in both Germany and Denmark but with an elegant twist. ”Lobscouse” is a stew made from veal, onions and potatoes, but we also added oyster mushrooms and truffle butter. It’s yours for a mere DKK 100.

IMG_5820
Bistro Royal:
Trying to eat healthy in the new year but also want to treat yourself? Then Bistro Royal’s yellowfin tuna tartare is the perfect choice. Dig in to a creamy mix of chopped ruby red fish, avocado, fresh herbs and a dressing made from soy, sesame, ginger and lime. DKK 85.

IMG_5943
Madklubben Steak: When the Copenhagen cold is ripping through your nostrils and winter coat you better seek refuge at our steak loving food club in the heart of the city. Start off your meal with the creamy mushroom bisque packed with pickled mushrooms, herbs and chopped hazelnuts. Get it as a part of your three course dinner for 300 DKK. Did we mention, that you can add scallops to the soup for an additional DKK 25?

IMG_5881
Tony’s: Our Italian eatery right by the historic ”Nyhavn” harbor district always serves up simple Italian deliciousness. The house ossobuco is no exception and this Milanese specialty with slowly braised and incredibly tender beef shank is served with creamy polenta, parmesan and gremolata for an additional DKK 25 to the DKK 200 three course menu.

IMG_6031
Madklubben Bistro-de-Luxe:
The original Madklubben branch is the definition of a value for money experience known for serving up elegant gastronomy at more than fair prices. Try the house steak tartare, which changes it’s ”clothes” according to the season. Right now it’s dressed in truffle mayonnaise, pickled mushrooms, tarragon and potato crisps. Only DKK 50 as part of a two or three course menu.

IMG_5748
Steak Royal:
What could possibly make lobster better? Oh yeah, how about broiling it under the grill with French Gruyere cheese, béchamel sauce and bred crumbs ground with fresh parsley. Voilà! The result is an irresistible classic by the name of ”Lobster Thermidor” served with a wedge of grilled lime and a stunning green hue from the parsley leaves.

Bar Next Door:
Okay, so it might not be a restaurant, but we simply had to include our popular cocktail bar in the bustling city district of Nørrebro. The team as Bar Next Door has created a silky smooth creation by the name of “Mayate”. Get ready for a mix of Calle 23 tequila, Kahlua, fresh lime juice, simple syrup and egg whites covered in its own little powdered sugar snow storm. It’s your for DKK 85.

The full lowdown for 2017: We welcome new restaurants and relocate others

Families come in all shapes and sizes. At Madklubben we’re a family of restaurants serving up great food at fair prices and that family is facing a bulk of exciting changes in 2017. Some restaurants are moving from one place to another, while no less than three brand new concepts in Copenhagen have been announced.

Catch up on all the tasty details right here:

Gran Torino: Our Italian crowd favorite closed at its current location by the end of 2016. On February 3rd the restaurant will open right next door in a more intimate setting at Sortedam Dossering number 5.

Madklubben Nørrebro: Our newest Madklubben branch will move into the space previously occupied by Gran Torino at Sortedam Dossering number 7C. This bustling urban eatery will open its doors on February 6th. Book your table here.

Hanzō: The Pan-Asian success will have its last opening day at Sortedam Dossering number 5 on January 21st. The location will be taken over by Italian sister restaurant Gran Torino, while Hanzō moves to a new and undisclosed venue in the city center during spring 2017.

L’Animal: As a passion project stretching beyond the everyday realm of the Madklubben family our CEO and founder Anders Aagaard will open an all day café named L’animal together with former Michelin restaurateur and current TV chef Thomas Herman on Værnedamsvej number 14 in Vesterbro in the spring of 2017.

Bazaar: As if we didn’t have enough exciting projects on our plate come April or May we will also open a Middle Eastern restaurant in the heart of Copenhagen. The exact location is still to be announced, but Bazaar will feature a wide array of delicacies from the Moorish, Arabic and Mediterranean cuisines.

Body shots go home: Bar Next Door to host tequila tasting with top notch producer

Body shots go home: Bar Next Door to host tequila tasting with top notch producer

Unfortunately we’ve had to cancel this event due to poor ticket sales.

We’ve all been there: Hanging on to the edge of a moving the bar with our fingernails while a little voice from within goes ”The only logical thing to do right now is to order a tray of tequila shots. Ooh, and don’t forget the salt and lemon wedges.” That’s also the last thing you hear before waking up the next morning with hickeys on your neck and chest and a failing memory of last nights events.

It’s about time we get past the unfortunate tequila memories and begin to appreciate the amazing agave spirit for what it is. It’s the doorway to a world of great stories, visionary producers and new techniques. That’s why we’ve invited tequila expert Rikki Godtfredsen of niche spirit import company Sprit & Co. to Bar Next Door by ”The Lakes”, and you’ve got a chance of joining all the fun.

IMG_4075

It all goes down on Tuesday September 6th at 8 pm where Rikki will lead up to 30 guests on a guided tour through the world of tequila. That naturally includes looking, sniffing and tasting 3 great tequilas from top producer ”Calle 23” which is run by a very creative woman named Sophie. The 100% agave made tequilas will be tasted on their own and comparatively. By the end of the night a special challenge will determine who leaves the tasting with 2 tickets to the Copenhagen Rum & Whisky Festival.

Tickets are a mere DKK 75 and that’ll also get you a welcome cocktail with tequila created by Bar Next Door’s manager, A.J. The limited seats are sold at a first come first served basis through shop.madklubben.dk.

What: ”Beyond the Body Shot: A Tequila Flight with Rikki Gotfredsen”
Where: Bar Next Door, Sortedam Dossering 3, 2200 Copenhagen N
When: Tuesday September 6th at 8 pm

Guide: Combine your dinner with a traditional Midsummer’s Eve bonfire

Guide: Combine your dinner with a traditional Midsummer’s Eve bonfire

Thursday the 23rd of June marks Midsummer’s Eve in Denmark and according to tradition people of all ages will flock to large bonfires and sing songs with their friends and family. Don’t miss out on this thoroughly Danish tradition: Check out our guide to where you can find a bonfire near every single one of Madklubben’s restaurants and bars.

City Centre:

Whether you’re going for classic dishes at Bistro Royal, modern cooking with French and Nordic roots at Madklubben Bistro-de-Luxe or rustic Italian fare at Tony’s the most impressive bonfire will take place at historic Nyhavn. The fire is lit at 10 pm and will be floating on a pram in the middle of the harbour.

If you’re on the lookout for delicious steaks, then head to newly refurbished Madklubben Steak in Pilestræde or elegant Steak Royal by City Hall. After dinner take a 5-10 minute stroll to the lush Ørsted Park right by Nørreport Station. Here you will find another floating fire in the middle of the lake starting at 10 pm.

Steak Royal is also located close to renowned amusement park Tivoli Gardens in the beginning of the Vesterbro neighborhood. Here the bonfire will start at 9:30 pm but remember that you have to pay an entry fee to the park.

Vesterbro:

Sit down for dinner at our vast urban eatery Madklubben Vesterbro located in the heart of the vibrant city district. Being one of the densest urban environments in Copenhagen you have to walk a bit in order to find the open and inviting Enghaveparken. Here they have no less than two different fires on the programme: One for the kids starting at 6 pm and a big one for the grownups beginning at 9 pm.

Nørrebro:

Come visit one of our three restaurants right on the bank of the manmade lakes separating the city centre from the bustling and multi-ethnic district of Nørrebro. Alabama Social serves up American soul food, while Hanzō dishes the delights on the Pan Asian Kitchen and Gran Torino prepares and Italian feast for all budgets.

Once you’ve downed your dinner walk no further than to the waterfront where two different bonfires will take place: One at Kaffesalonen near Dronning Louises Bridge starting at 10 pm and another at Sølund Care Center and Fredensbro kicking off already at 8:45 pm.

If you get thirsty from all the smoke and flames our popular cocktail pusher in Nørrebro, Bar Next Door, will be open until midnight. We wish you and you loved ones a wonderful Midsummer’s Eve and look forward to welcoming you at one of Madklubben’s restaurants.

Meet the team heading to Roskilde Festival

Meet the team heading to Roskilde Festival

With only a few people absent, yesterday afternoon marked the first gathering of our team for the forthcoming Roskilde Festival. For the first time ever Madklubben will venture to Northern Europe’s largest music festival which takes place in the city of Roskilde south of Copenhagen from June 25th through July 2nd. 90.000 guests and more than 30.000 volunteers will travel to the festival marking its 44th anniversary.

We will be serving up big taste for small bucks in the ”Food Court” area which is a nickname for 17 different food stalls gathered in a converted cow stable. It’s located right by the Gloria stage in between the festival’s two largest stages: Orange and Arena. The final dishes won’t be revealed until next week but we can tell you this much: They will be tempting and greasy in just the right way and feature up to 90% organic ingredients.

To lift the task of bringing Madklubben to Roskilde Festival we’ve put together a stellar team from all of Madklubben’s restaurants in Copenhagen. It’s a mix of head chefs, restaurant managers, sous chefs, waiters, cooks and students with a common goal of creating and serving great and honest food to the people. Naturally we’ve also ensured that they know how to dance, tan and chug a few beers – it is Roskilde Festival after all!

We can’t wait to pitch our tents and get our very first Roskilde adventure up and running. If you’re going to the festival this year then make sure to stop by and say hi at the Food Court located right by the Gloria Stage and the Art Zone. We open on Wednesday the 29th of June and wont say goodbye until the music dies out in the early hours between July 2nd and 3rd.
