Meet Jolan – the nice guy who moved from the Netherlands and ended up at Bistro Royal

Without people there would be no Madklubben – and we have at least as many great stories as we have colleagues. We are actually over 600 employees in the Madklubben family and in this story you shall meet Johan van Duffelen who has the role as assistant manager at Bistro Royal. But we shall also a stop by Sri Lanka, Nørrebro and the great love…

Jolan – your from Holland, but how did you end up in Denmark?

“It’s actually a cute story – after my high school years in Holland I did not know what to study, so I went to Sri Lanka to do some volunteer work. I lived with 20 young people and we were like one bog family – it was here I met my girlfriend and today she’s my fiancé. We still saw each other after Sri Lanka and one day I decided to move to Denmark and go for the big love. I started to study here and shortly after arriving in Denmark I got a job at Bistro Royal. That’s the short story about me and Denmark.”

What have you learned about Bistro Royal during your five years?

“I’ve learnt quite a lot. I’ve been working in the service industry since I was 16 years old so I have quite some years of experience. I started as a runner, then I became waiter, afterwards inspector and now I’m assistant manager. I’ve learned a lot about the industry due to my many roles and I feel that I’ve got a great all round perspective and I know how the restaurant works. Due to my many coworkers I’ve also learned how to communicate better and work as a team so the restaurant is running as good as possible.”

What have you learned about Denmark and the Danes?

“The culture in Denmark and Holland are quite alike but besides moving here and getting settled the language has been the biggest challenge. Luckily for me most of the people I meet speak really good English, so I was able to communicate well until my Danish improved. Today I’m practically fluent in Danish and some people actually think I’m from Jutland, when they hear me speak. I quickly fell on love with Copenhagen and after five hears here I feel like a part of the Copenhagen – and that Copenhagen is part of me. People are generally really friendly here and the city is easy to acces by bike – Copenhagen has also become more international and multicultural during my time here – when I came here you could not find many restaurants who would hire an English speaking person and that’s different today.”

Could you describea perfect day at the restaurant?

“A perfect day at Bistro Royal starts with me coming in a bit early so I have time for a cup of coffee and have the possibility to chat with my colleagues. Then I start looking at the bookings and plan how to run service smoothly. It’s also makes my day when both guests and colleagues are satisfied when day is over.”

How would you describe the DNA of the restaurant?

“It’s a restaurant for all; young and old and for those who chose to have a light meal or an all evening experience. Our prices are fair so everyone can afford a great meal and we can practically always help guests who have special wishes or needs. Bistro Royal has a relaxed and cosy atmosphere with a French twist.”

What’s your own favorite dish at the moment? 

“It’s hard to choose bud I love meat so I would say a rib-eye steak with fries and sauce bearnaise – or a steak tartare.”

Do you have a great story from Bistro Royal that you can share with us?

“There are many different stories that can be told during my work years but one of them still very clear in my mind was a couple traveling from Australia and having lunch in the restaurant. They were super sweet and we had a great chat during there stay. The next day the couple came back and talked with me about that they came back not just because they liked the food but specially because they loved the atmosphere and they could really see that the team was working together so well and having fun during work. That complement always stayed in my mind and is definitely a story to remember!”

Last but not least – what’s on the 2019 agenda in your personal life?

“I have many plans for 2019. The year began with my promotion to assistant manager and I’m excited to see what I can learn from my new position. I’m also finishing my education and my fiancé and I bought a new flat last summer and we’re still renovating. We also planed to go on a longer trip this spring, so lost of stuff will happen!”

Ready, set, DinnerDays – will you visit us at Madklubben?

Yet again Madklubben have decided to join the restaurant festival, DinnerDays, from February the 8th til 17th. This year we have great offers from six of our restaurants. The concept is simple: Each person will be served three dishes for 210 kroner (+ booking fee). The menu is fixed so all you have to do is sit down and enjoy.

Brasserie Royal

Brasserie Royal is to be found just across the City Hall. The restaurant is elegant and classic and during DinnerDays the menu consists of lobster bisque, ox roast and apple compote.

Alabama Social

We’ve taken the best from the Southern States to Nørrebro and it can all be experienced at Alabama Social. This year you can choose between three starters and main courses, but the dessert is fixed due its fame: It’s our apple crumble!

We guarantee lots of feel good on Vesterbrogade 62 which is the home of Madklubben Vesterbro. We have room for more than 300 guests, and during DinnerDays we serve Asian style salmon, ox roast and a Bounty sundae for dessert.

Bistro Royal is our super local restaurant with an excellent view to the ongoing and rather busy life outside. The menu for DinnerDays consists of three servings: Lobster bisque, ox roast with red wine sauce, crispy fries and a green salad. Dessert? A fluffy delicious chocolate mousse.

Have a break – have a steak

Welcome to Pilestræde 23 – the home of Madklubben Steak. We focus on the great taste and the good meat. During Dinner Days a menu of three dishes will be served. You will be starting with a creamy soup made from Jerusalem artichoke topped with truffle oil and hazelnut. The main dish is our ox roast from cornfed ox – you slice the roast at the table and the sides are crispy fries, sauce bearnaise and a green salad. Dessert? Chocolate mousse!

Welcome to Madklubben Aarhus! We’re located in a historical building from 1897 and this years DinnerDays menu starts with a yellowfin tuna as a starter. The main dish os put famous ox roast with sauce bordelaise. The grand finale is a brownie with dark, fresh berries.

Christmas is right around the corner and on the other side of the street waits 2019. At Madklubben’s restaurants we look forward to relax with friends and family during the holidays just as we will need a bit of time to sleep off the hangovers from New Year’s Eve. While some need a little more rest, a couple of our restaurants opens again already on January the 1st – both in Aarhus and in Copenhagen!

At Bistro Royal, we ensure a genuine bistro feeling, exactly as you’d find it on the street corners of some of the worlds most elegant capitals. – Best of all? We are just a trip to Kongens Nytorv away. Here we serve you big smiles and a beautiful setting with brown leather sofas, intimate dining booths and Danish Børge Mogensen chairs.

Both exquisite specialties and classic favorites play the leads in our Christmas menu this year. Welcome the holidays with creamy a lobster bisque served with apple, salt baked celery and chervil, duck confit served with truffle mashed potatoes, tempered red cabbage, hazelnuts and a Christmas sauce or enjoy our tournedos rossini on a butter roasted crouton with truffle sauce, pan seared foie gras, freshly shredded truffles and warm crispy fries. Our dessert selection also celebrates the holidays sporting a Christmas chocolate mousse served with orange meringue and caramelized nuts as well as a panna cotta of white chocolate assisted by cherries and crispy rice.

Great news: Soon you can get take away delivered from ALL OF Madklubben’s restaurants!

In April something new and exciting happened at three of Madklubben’s popular restaurants. After many year’s of hungry requests from our guests, Alabama Social, Gran Torino and Food Club opened for take away. And we think it has gone quite well. In fact we think it has gone so well, that we’ve decided to expand the concept to ALL of the restaurants in the Madklubben family!

We will start with our pizza joints Frankies from October 20th, and in the coming weeks the rest of the restaurants will follow. So soon you will be able to enjoy our juicy steaks, great salads, delicious desserts and much, much more whenever and wherever you want!

Wolt will be our partner in this endeavor, and it will be possible to order your food directly via Wolt’s mobile app and directly from Wolt’s website.

We’re looking forward to telling you more about the menus from our take away restaurants, and we will be sure to let your know when a new restaurant is open for take away. Until then you can work up an appetite and look forward to honest and tasty take away from Saturday October 20th. We sure do!

New Year’s Eve 2018/2019 is slowly getting closer. And even though it mentally still feels like miles away, we can’t stop being just a little excited for this always amazing and festive evening. True to tradition we repeat the succes of the last couple of year’s and invite you to a New Year’s Eve dinner at all Madklubben’s restaurants on the last day of the year. Theres something for everyone (and every age!) and the prices span from DKK 600 to DKK 1.400 per person. While some of our restaurants let you pick and choose your own beverages others have gone the extra mile to tailor an elegant wine pairing as a part of the package.

This year – for something special – we also would love to welcome you inside to our New Year’s Eve dinner at Madklubben’s event space at Østerbro. This will be a social dining experience with an upscale 3 course dinner, free beverages, bubbles and bingo on the program!

Okay, so we know you might be thinking ”Why on earth are they advertising for Christmas already?”, while you pause and realize that it might actually not be that long before the malls are covered in sparkly ornaments and supermarkets are packed with candy canes and peppernuts (check the link to learn more about this classic Danish Christmas cookie.)

Don’t worry there’s still some time to go, but it’s now you have to get going with booking a table if you want to secure the perfect date and time for this year’s Christmas dinner with your colleagues, friends or family.

Last year we presented our festive and “Christmassy” landing page which can help you get a full overview of all our restaurants, which have a special Christmas menu for you and your party. (And yes, we thought about dressing it up even further with snow and elves, but we thought it would be better to ease you into it). On the site groups of 10 guests or more can explore classic and more untraditional Christmas restaurant experiences all characterized by scrumptious food and more than fair prices.

Yes, you heard right! We love Aarhus, our wonderful staff and the great welcome of Madklubben, that we have experienced. Therefore we wish to expand and are now on our way with our second restaurant in Aarhus City.

What?
Inspiration and experience will be collected from Bistro Royal and Madklubben Steak in Copenhagen, but it won’t be a copy hereof or a Madklubben Aarhus 2.0, that we will open up for. The atmosphere will be created by New York vibes, Danish design and Francophile feelings, and you can look forward to an à la carte menu including everything from steak, tartare, fish, pork and duck to green and garnish in all forms. Oh and not to forget a decent wine menu with something for all preferences. The price of a 3 course dinner will be around DKK 300, and for lunch we will offer classic bistro serverings and Danish “smørrebrød” for also a favorable price.

Where?

We will take over the rustic location of the previous restaurant and night club “Castenskiold” – right at the sunny side of the central creek in Aarhus, just a few hundred meters away from our other address at Hack Kampmanns Plads. Our preparations for the renovation project are already in full motion, and we are looking forward to welcome you inside to a newly renovated dining spot with capacity of 120 guests indoors. We are quite sure that our 100 seats outside in the sun also will be a great hit when the weather is nice.

When?

We won’t miss out of the cozy months of Christmas, why we will be ready to open up for our new restaurant already in November this year, which we are still working on finding the the perfect name for. In sight we look forward to also be opening up for breakfast and hereby be an all day restaurant.
