Welcome to Gran Torino

It’s all about the pizza at Gran Torino where the smoldering Valoriani stone oven makes sure each pie is baked to perfection. Our pizzas are inspired by the Neapolitan tradition where the crust is crispy but the middle soft, chewy and tasty. Compose your own three course dinner with pizza as the hero from as little as DKK 200 and enjoy the view over Copenhagen’s lakes, or catch a glimpse of the busy chefs through the big window separating the kitchen and the dining room. In February of 2017 Gran Torino moved to a new beautiful space at Sortedam Dossering number 5.

Latest from Gran Torino:

New restaurants: Madklubben Nørrebro and Gran Torino 2.0 are now open!

New restaurants: Madklubben Nørrebro and Gran Torino 2.0 are now open!

Just as January kissed February ”hello” we here at Madklubben welcomed to no less that two new restaurants. Well, more like 1,5 new restaurants, seeing at our popular Italian pizza pusher Gran Torino just moved to a new location. But with a brand new decor and ditto menu concept it definitely qualifies as  ”breaking foodie news” as well.

Gran Torino moved from its former courtyard space out to 5 Sortedam Dossering right on the bank of Copenhagen’s ”Lakes”. It’s a smaller space but with the perfect atmosphere for an urban pizza place sporting both classic and more gourmet inspired pies. Complete with retired merry-go-round horses, a big window between the busy chefs and hungry diners and a brand new menu concept, Gran Torino version 2.0 opened its doors on February 3rd.

Following a series of test dinners in late January, Madklubben Nørrebro finally opened on Gran Torino’s former address on February 6th. Expect a bustling neighborhood spot featuring yummy dishes from the Middle East and beyond fresh from the roaring flame grill. The interior mixes modernist Danish furniture design with rustic industrial details from the venue’s warehouse past. Check out the full menu here.

Both Gran Torino and Madklubben Nørrebro (surprise!) can be found in Copenhagen’s vibrant district of Nørrebro: A cultural melting pot where immigrants mix with students and creative locals surrounded by cool little shops, inspiring eateries and thirst quenching bars.

Speaking of the latter why not check out our very own Nørrebro cocktail hot spot Bar Next Door while you’re in town?

The full lowdown for 2017: We welcome new restaurants and relocate others

The full lowdown for 2017: We welcome new restaurants and relocate others

Families come in all shapes and sizes. At Madklubben we’re a family of restaurants serving up great food at fair prices and that family is facing a bulk of exciting changes in 2017. Some restaurants are moving from one place to another, while no less than three brand new concepts in Copenhagen have been announced.

Catch up on all the tasty details right here:

Gran Torino: Our Italian crowd favorite closed at its current location by the end of 2016. On February 3rd the restaurant will open right next door in a more intimate setting at Sortedam Dossering number 5.

Madklubben Nørrebro: Our newest Madklubben branch will move into the space previously occupied by Gran Torino at Sortedam Dossering number 7C. This bustling urban eatery will open its doors on February 6th. Book your table here.

Hanzō: The Pan-Asian success will have its last opening day at Sortedam Dossering number 5 on January 21st. The location will be taken over by Italian sister restaurant Gran Torino, while Hanzō moves to a new and undisclosed venue in the city center during spring 2017.

L’Animal: As a passion project stretching beyond the everyday realm of the Madklubben family our CEO and founder Anders Aagaard will open an all day café named L’animal together with former Michelin restaurateur and current TV chef Thomas Herman on Værnedamsvej number 14 in Vesterbro in the spring of 2017.

Bazaar: As if we didn’t have enough exciting projects on our plate come April or May we will also open a Middle Eastern restaurant in the heart of Copenhagen. The exact location is still to be announced, but Bazaar will feature a wide array of delicacies from the Moorish, Arabic and Mediterranean cuisines.

Grand plans for Nørrebro: New concepts and several restaurant moves are on the way

Grand plans for Nørrebro: New concepts and several restaurant moves are on the way

New year – new adventures! As we bid ”adieu” to 2016 and enter into 2017 we here at Madklubben also prepare to embark on a new and exciting a journey that will welcome a new restaurant to our family as well see two of our current eateries relocated to new venues.

Get ready for Madklubben Nørrebro:

December 31st 2016 marked the last opening day of our Italian restaurant Gran Torino at its current location in the courtyard at Sortedam Dossering number 7C. The construction workers have already taken over the space to create Madklubben Nørrebro: A combination of all the best things from the existing Madklubben restaurants mixed with the umistakebly cool vibe that already dominates at sister restaurant Madklubben Vesterbro.

”Since the opening in 2012 Madklubben Vesterbro has become a huge success. We believe it’s due to the fact that the food, decor and atmosphere all mirror the urban and cultural fabric of this specific part of Copenhagen,” says Madklubben’s founder and owner Anders Aagaard before elaborating on the plans for Madklubben Nørrebro:

”The district of Nørrebro calls for a restaurant of the same caliber: A neighborhood spot packed with guests on a Tuesday as well as a Saturday where the menu reflects the Middle Eastern cuisine, which is woven deeply into the cultural fabric of Nørrebro. Naturally served at the great value-for-money prices that people have come to expect from a Madklubben restaurant.”

New venues for Gran Torino and Hanzō:

As we prepare for the opening of Madklubben Nørrebro two of our other popular concepts will move to new locations. Gran Torino will relocate to the space currently occupied by our Asian restaurant Hanzō at Sortedam Dossering number 5. In turn, Hanzō will move to a brand new and (for now) secret venue in the heart of Copenhagen during the spring of 2017.

”Both Gran Torino and Hanzō are successful concepts, but we believe that they can develop even more at other locations. Gran Torino will become a more intimate restaurant with a renewed focus on great pizzas combined with outdoor service by the lake during spring and summer. Hanzō on the other hand will be able to fulfill its potential as a speakeasy gastronomic brat in the city center,” concludes Anders Aagaard.

When it comes to big building projects like this, schedules tend to shift back and forth a bit. But as of now, we expect the the new restaurant openings and moves to be completed at these dates:

  • Madklubben Nørrebro: Will open at 7C Sortedam Dossering on February 6th 2017.
  • Gran Torino: Last day of service at 7C Sortedam Dossering on December 31st 2016 – will reopen at 5 Sortedam Dossering on February 3rd 2017.
  • Hanzō: Last day of service at 5 Sortedam Dossering on January 21st 2017 – will reopen in the heart of Copenhagen during spring 2017 at an unannounced location.

Gran Torino is back in business

Gran Torino is back in business

Following a two-week summer holiday our urban Italian eatery in the vibrant Nørrebro district of Copenhagen, Gran Torino, is now back and ready to serve up some Southern European goodness starting Monday the 11th of July at 5:30 pm.

We look forward to welcoming our guests back with a new and updated menu packed with Italian delicacies. In other words, the perfect solution whether you’re the type who just got back from vacation and already misses it or you just want a culinary escape from the rainy Danish summer.

Dig in to some pasta with prawns and fresh tomatoes, risotto with smoked scallops and artichoke, silky smooth mozzarella, dried prosciutto, carpaccio or a whole range of antipasti. Don’t forget our pizza selection with no less than seven different choices, unless you’re more tempted by a juicy rib eye steak served with gnocchi or the fish of the day with grilled summer veggies, that is. Looking for a sweet finish? Don’t worry, you have the choice between GT’s tiramisu, a chilled rhubarb soup with strawberry sorbet and a creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of espresso.

Did we make you hungry? Sorry, but not sorry. Go ahead and check out the full summer menu at Gran Torino here. Don’t forget to book your table in advance by clicking this link.

Gran Torino is closed for 2 weeks during the summer

Gran Torino is closed for 2 weeks during the summer

Before you strap on your sandals and set out for a night at Gran Torino please note that our Italian courtyard eatery is closed from June 27th until July 10th both days included.

The restaurant’s planned summer holiday is carried out due to the fact that the kitchen at Gran Torino will be used for production for Madklubben’s food stand at Roskilde Festival; Northern Europe’s largest music Festival. You can read much more about that adventure here, which also includes photos of the delicious dishes we will be serving at the Festival.

Also we want to highlight our two sister restaurants right next door. They both have stellar views of ”The Lakes” and a much larger outdoor area than Gran Torino. So go check out Asian hotspot Hanzō or American soul food restaurant Alabama Social instead. Craving a cocktail or five? Then Bar Next Door is also open for business as usual.

We look forward to welcoming you back for dinner at Gran Torino from Monday the 11th of July.

Guide: Combine your dinner with a traditional Midsummer’s Eve bonfire

Guide: Combine your dinner with a traditional Midsummer’s Eve bonfire

Thursday the 23rd of June marks Midsummer’s Eve in Denmark and according to tradition people of all ages will flock to large bonfires and sing songs with their friends and family. Don’t miss out on this thoroughly Danish tradition: Check out our guide to where you can find a bonfire near every single one of Madklubben’s restaurants and bars.

City Centre:

Whether you’re going for classic dishes at Bistro Royal, modern cooking with French and Nordic roots at Madklubben Bistro-de-Luxe or rustic Italian fare at Tony’s the most impressive bonfire will take place at historic Nyhavn. The fire is lit at 10 pm and will be floating on a pram in the middle of the harbour.

If you’re on the lookout for delicious steaks, then head to newly refurbished Madklubben Steak in Pilestræde or elegant Steak Royal by City Hall. After dinner take a 5-10 minute stroll to the lush Ørsted Park right by Nørreport Station. Here you will find another floating fire in the middle of the lake starting at 10 pm.

Steak Royal is also located close to renowned amusement park Tivoli Gardens in the beginning of the Vesterbro neighborhood. Here the bonfire will start at 9:30 pm but remember that you have to pay an entry fee to the park.

Vesterbro:

Sit down for dinner at our vast urban eatery Madklubben Vesterbro located in the heart of the vibrant city district. Being one of the densest urban environments in Copenhagen you have to walk a bit in order to find the open and inviting Enghaveparken. Here they have no less than two different fires on the programme: One for the kids starting at 6 pm and a big one for the grownups beginning at 9 pm.

Nørrebro:

Come visit one of our three restaurants right on the bank of the manmade lakes separating the city centre from the bustling and multi-ethnic district of Nørrebro. Alabama Social serves up American soul food, while Hanzō dishes the delights on the Pan Asian Kitchen and Gran Torino prepares and Italian feast for all budgets.

Once you’ve downed your dinner walk no further than to the waterfront where two different bonfires will take place: One at Kaffesalonen near Dronning Louises Bridge starting at 10 pm and another at Sølund Care Center and Fredensbro kicking off already at 8:45 pm.

If you get thirsty from all the smoke and flames our popular cocktail pusher in Nørrebro, Bar Next Door, will be open until midnight. We wish you and you loved ones a wonderful Midsummer’s Eve and look forward to welcoming you at one of Madklubben’s restaurants.

Design magazine: Gran Torino is one of Copenhagen’s coolest restaurants

Design magazine: Gran Torino is one of Copenhagen’s coolest restaurants

”When going out for a restaurant experience, everything counts: from what is on your plate to what is in your glass and how the personnel greets you. Today, more and more restaurants are focusing heavily on interior design as well.”

Thus noted design magazine DANISH TM sets the tone for an article entitled ”fine dining with great furniture and wine”. For the piece they’ve handpicked three Copenhagen restaurants to showcase how a restaurant’s brand is also conveyed through its design choices. We’re proud to say that Madklubben’s italian courtyard trattoria, Gran Torino, is part of the selected few alongside Michelin starred Kadeau and south american gourmet hotspot Taller.

“Gran Torino is not just your typical Italian restaurant,” the journalist writes and then elaborates: ”Here, you have a great New Yorker-ish atmosphere that is emphasized with cool furniture.” Highlighting the seating arrangements at Gran Torino, he goes on to describe iconic Danish designer Børge Mogensen who drew the Søborg Chair back in 1952 and Jørgen Rasmussen, who is the man behind the KEVI office chair from 1973. Both chairs have been painted in a custom green color in order to match the green metro tiles on the walls.

The article also reveals more about the space’s history as a central storage facility for Danish supermarket brand Irma and how we have preserved the industrial details from a time gone by. Should you be tempted to visit our chic Italian eatery yourself then hop on over and check out the full menu. If you want to book a table that’s also easily done online.
