Anders Aagaard is the founder and owner of Madklubben. In 2007, he had a dream – a dream of creating a restaurant where good food was made at reasonable prices, served in beautiful surroundings by smiling people. A food club, if you will.

Whether you were a CEO or a first-year university student, Madklubben was meant to be the place where you could enjoy a wonderful dining experience without breaking into a cold sweat when the waiter brought the bill.

I wanted to create a food club. To create a culture of going out to eat – even on a dreary Tuesday in October.

Anders' motivation was to create a culture of dining out in Denmark. A culture where people would also go out to eat on a regular, dreary Tuesday in October, when restaurants were often empty back in 2007.

Today, that dream has come true – and more. One restaurant has grown into more than 40 across the country, each offering something truly special in its own way.

It may not be typically Sønderjysk to have ambitions as grand as if one had grown up surrounded by the "American dream," no matter what one pursues. But perhaps it aligns well with how unorthodox it is, as a Sønderjysk native, to grow up dreaming of standing on the bright stages of Broadway.

Nonetheless, that’s exactly how Anders Aagaard, the founder and owner of Madklubben, grew up in Sønderborg. It was always clear that the witty young man aimed for something more. Much more, in fact.

It was about the desire to experience things, a quest to understand the world and the people around you – not just in Sønderborg, but across the globe.

Madklubben became a reality precisely because of this combination of ambition, a thirst for adventure, and a curiosity about people.
